Wanaka is a small but stunning Alpine resort, situated on
the eastern shores of a stunningly beautiful lake, surrounded by the breathtaking
Southern Alps, a World heritage listed National Park,
With three international ski areas and the largest
heli-skiing area outside North America, Lake Wanaka offers something for
everyone. Lake Wanaka is the perfect base to experience some of the best skiing

restaurants and any amount of off-snow adventure activities; from skydiving to
golf, mountain biking to winery tours.
High mountains, reliable snow, dry powder and the largest
skiable terrain in Australasia. These things give Wanaka some of the best
skiing and boarding in New Zealand and the Southern Hemisphere.
Night Life
Wanaka has over forty bars, pubs, lounges and nightclubs,
and during the winter season every night in town is a busy night, with many
bars enticing you in with a roaring fire, happy hour deals and good music.
On the Lake front there is the Wanaka Ale House, Lounge Bar,
HQ, Trout Bar and Kai, these are great places to do a bit of Apreski while
enjoying the awesome mountain views across Lake Wanaka
If you feel like a quiet drink and some gentle jazz then
“Uno” is the place for you.
“Opium” at the other end of town is nearly always pumping.
Has pool tables, live music and some pretty good pub food.
Just up from the Lake Front is Post Office Lane, a small
thoroughfare off Ardmore Street, is now home to four of the town’s newest and
most exciting venues for food and drink - Barluga, Woody’s, The Cow and the
Botswana Butchery, this mini neighborhood has become a hub for eating,
drinking and socialising, featuring indoor and outdoor seating and open fires
Dining in and out
Wanaka has one main supermarket in the centre of town where
you will purchase all your grocery items, from fresh produce to meats, frozens,
a beer and wine section and a delicatessen.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are also available from the
Mediterranean food market along with bulk food products, fresh breads, cheeses
and pastas.
Over the road from the market is the local butchery where
you can source all cuts of meat and the ever-popular local sausage for the BBQ.
Dining out in Wanaka can range from fish and chips on the
lakefront to fine dining at one of the many restaurants. Restaurants include,
Indian, Mexican, Thai, Seafood, along with a Japanese café with a kiwi twist, and
an organic café.
All the cafes in town serve great lattes and the delicious
cooked breakfasts are worth getting a hangover for.
Shopping
Firstly and most importantly you will find 7 ski and
snowboard shops in Wanaka covering all the major hardware, clothing and accessory
brands.
As for everything else there is pretty much nothing that you
can’t buy in Wanaka, whether it is a book, clothes, gifts, electronics or other
sporting equipment. Whatever your needs you should be able to find it in a
store in town.
Clothing stores range from snow and surf wear to street wear
to high fashion for women and men. You will find that there is a great range of
well-known international labels in the many stores along with some awesome kiwi
designs.
There are many gift stores that don’t just have the usual
tourist paraphernalia but have really fantastic original artworks and jewellery
made by local people.
Other stores in town include, travel agencies, photo
development, internet cafes, hardware stores and bike shops to name a few.
Major credit cards are accepted and there are a number of
banks to assist with changing travelers cheques or foreign currency. |
